As the Director of Chicago modeling agency, Ocean Model Group, I have had the opportunity to meet hundreds of Chicago trade show models. From my view point, there are truly only 5 things that matter when it comes to marketing yourself. I highly suggest each of you take a look at my 5 tips for a Chicago trade show model, coming from the Director of a Chicago modeling agency.
1. Your looks can only take you so far, so try harder. There are a million beautiful women in this world, it is what takes you beyond that, that defines your success. Showing up at each event with a smile on your face and a positive attitude can make or break your reputation in this industry, so always come prepared with a good attitude.
2. But looking good (naturally) helps too! With that said, Chicago trade show models are in the market of beauty, and good looks sell. Because we work in a person to person field, its important you look your best every time you meet a client, or an industry professional. When I ask to meet with a model, you have 10 minutes to show me why you should be booked more than the next girl. If you come with wet hair, no makeup and bad skin, Im going to assume that’s what the client will see too…
3. Tell the truth, even if it hurts. I’m not dumb, but Im surprised at how many models take me as a fool. The excuses I have heard for missing meetings, or showing up late to events baffle me. If something bad happened to you on Friday, then why exactly can you not make it on Monday? It takes 5 minutes to send a text, an email or a phone call saying “Hey, (Insert documentable excuse here) happened, I can’t make it… please forgive me.” Giving our agents ample time to find a replacement will leave everyone happier, including the client, and will also maintain your reputation.
4. It’s called a job for a reason. Yeah, your job is one that involves socializing…but that shouldn’t be all that you do while you’re there. You are the company’s representative at each event, and you have the responsibility of delivering that company’s message to their potential clients. Events are fun, but remember why you’re getting paid, and I’ll give you a hint–it’s not to talk on your cell phone and disappear for hours on end.
5. We are watching you. Chicago is a big city, but the world of event staffing is not as large. If you don’t show up on time, if you’re constantly asking to go home early, agencies and clients find out. I know things about my Chicago trade show model’s attitudes and behaviors that they probably don’t think I know, and most likely will never bring up to them. Divas don’t last long in this industry, so make your decisions wisely and I promise you, they will pay off.
