3D Imaging is quickly becoming a practical technology that many industries adapt to make their businesses more efficient. Will this affect the jobs of our promotional models at Ocean Model Group? Yes, and soon!
Fashion is already being changed by the use of 3D scanning. At a Macy’s in St. Louis, clients of swimsuit designer Lori Coulter don’t have to try on an array of suits to determine which one will be their poolside attire. Customers “discreetly step into a room where the shop uses a scanner to take 140 measurements in less than a minute, then uploads them to a computer, which builds a 3D image and suggests an array of figure-flattering styles. The client chooses a style and pattern, and within as few as three days a custom-made swimsuit is ready to wear.”
What does this mean for models? Well, you might not have to walk into a meeting with a client and hand over your measurements. Instead, you might have a disk with a 3D image of yourself, ready for the client to view and analyze. And late night or early morning fittings could be a thing of the past! With over 140 measurements programmed in to 3D scans, designers could fit their styles virtually, cutting down on the time needed with the actual model.
Still think 3D fitting is too good to be true, or just another unnecessary step in the process? Since computers can anticipate “a fabric’s texture, how it drapes, and how it would move on a 3D model walking down a runway,” we definitely think this technology is prepped to make a difference for models, designers, and customers alike.
