Navigating your way through the Chicago modeling industry can be an intimidating task, here are several of the most common newbie questions answered by our agency Director.

Question: Im only 5′4″ but I want to be a model. Is there any room in the industry for someone as short as me?

Definitely! There are plenty of opportunities for petite models in the modeling industry. While you may not wind up walking the runways of fashion week, models come in all shapes, sizes and ages!  At Ocean Model Group, we specialize in Chicago’s biggest trade shows, promotions and print; we look for attractive, outgoing girls who are willing to work hard and have fun doing it!

Question: Last week at the mall, this woman approached me and told me I had the “look” she wanted, all I had to do was a test shoot  and if I pass, they’ll fly me to NY. Is $3,000.00 a lot for the test shoot?

No reputable agency will ever require you to pay them money to be a part of their organization. Usually, when they require money from the front end, it means there is not enough funding on the back end and therefor, you should tread lightly. The best modeling agencies in Chicago will want models that they believe will add strength to their brand image. They make money from booking you on gigs and should not be making you shoot with specific, expensive photographers.

Question: I sent my photos into an agency and now they want me to come in for an open call, what happens at an open call? What should I wear?

Open calls are, in a way, an interview. An agency wants to see what you look like in person. We live in a society that is very dependent on digital retouching, which can be great for print ads. However, when you are a Chicago trade show or promotions model, you must look your best in person! When you show up for an open call, it is best to wear minimal makeup and natural hair, they want to see what their client will see when you show up to an event. Bring your most professional attitude and always remain professional. Any Chicago modeling agency will agree that a model who shows up late once will show up late again–be on time. This is also an important time for an agency to get a feel for your personality. Relax, be yourself and give it your best shot!
